In fact, an earlier letter stated that school gets out earlier this week. The kids will arrive at 1:00pm and they still will stay til 6pm. So everyone be careful of other kids out on the street. As far as the noise going on, that will stop. I never realised they were so noisy. But, the location is sweet. Our officer is doing a fantastic job, finding people driving with suspended licenses, no insurance, speeders, and others who believe that they are above the law. We are also going to get a handle on all the drugs and alcohol sales right on our streets in broad daylight. There has been no law in Lakeside for years and those people have been taking over our town. Its time to take our town back. I would advise everyone to put on your thinking cap, and drive like you do in other cities. We shouldn't be any different. We have had several animals hit by cars and our speed limit should have never allowed that to happen. We wanted a safe and beautiful town, but without an officer it wasn't going to happen. We have put up with vandelism too long. We have our beautiful Garden Club working with beautification now, we have the small children off the street with Kid Zone, we have food and clothes for the homeless provided by the Lions and Fire Dept., we have several classes that the Fire Dept. volunteers are actually taking and improving their talents, and now soon enough we have the holidays coming. I am excited to see if people actually get involved and celebrate with all of us. Halloween is at the Fire Hall, Thanksgiving is at the Lions Hall, and Christmas will be everywhere and the Lions Hall will have a Christmas Program just like every year for the public and several group will sing and perform for you. Don't forget the chili cook off at the Lions also on November 7th @ 7pm. We hope to see some of you in western attire. Wouldn't that be fun. There is a section in this website that says EVENTS. Read it everyone and attend, become part of this town. We are really getting a fix on everything. Join us at the Halloween party at the Fire Hall. The kids have a blast. The LCA meeting is coming also and they will hold it at City Hall this Thursday at 7pm. Hopefully our officer will make this one. Every club is here to help and we would love suggestions. Hopefully its you who will come to these events. We can find some fun for everyone. Thank You everyone.

Lakegirl101 I am really sorry if you or your child have been woke up in the middle of the night. I know I would be upset. I dont know you but if you would like to meet with us and talk in person we are down at kid zone monday thu friday if there is school we start as soon as school gets out and stay there till 6 pm I would like to meet you there is alot here in lakeside and I understand how it is in a big city but let me assure you lakeside is nothing like a big city we are more like a big familey evan though we are not blood there are alot of ppl here who would do anything to help a fellow citazen. I sould know my mother died last year and the ppl here in this town were so helpful. We had alot of my mothers familey come in from out of town.I think there where about 28 ppl all togther that came and stayed for more than a week after my mothers death. I was not in the mood to host anyone here at my house and I didnt have the money to either but the ppl in the comunity steped up and help out, with out me asking for anything. We had dinner cooked and brought over to the house for us. We had ppl that gave us cases of soda and a big box of peaches. There was evan one person who came in and helped clean the house. I know it might not seem like much but when there is a someone who has had a very tramatizing evant happen to them every little thing helps. I love this community and it kills me to think that I will have to leave it really soon, but I hope you will think about stopping by some time and get to know us.

Lakegirl101,
Sometimes it is hard to get to know people, when you move from one place to another. There are lots of groups that could benifit by having you on them. Go to an LCP meeting or stop by Kid Zone, you have kids so does Kid Zone. The Ladies club, Harmony garden group, Lions club. There are a lot of things out there that you could maybe find a comfortable spot in doing something and making new friends. If someone is disturbing your children at night just let them know that . I think that most people either have children or have had children and I would think that they could respect that and be quiet in your area.
I don't think anybody is better than anyone else. If you get a little bit involved with things around here ,you will make some friends and things will look a little better to you.
Making ends meet these days is difficult at best. Demands on time are huge. Most people find that getting out of the house and doing something diffrent even if only for a couple of hours per week makes a big differance. You will never meet any new friends if you don't try some differant .If nothing changes, nothing changes.
I hope that you meet some new people ,get a little bit involved , make some new friends, and maybe you will get to like Lakeside a little bit better.

It is pretty sad that people are still ripping up signs. It is friends of candidates who actually pay out of their own pockets for these signs. Last night one of each candidate was found laying in the road on Airport. This time there was only one vehicle and one motorcycle that past though Airport at the time they were pulled. We are passing this on to the Sheriff's Office. We have the license plate for each.
We want to express concerns about driving fast around the corners because of wet pavement. It has been very slippery out there so be careful. Also, watch out for kids today (friday Oct. 10) because there is no school. Also, next week the kids only have half days because of parent/teacher conference days. Kid Zone will be up and operating from 1-6 pm each day for their convenience.
This is fire prevention month so check your fire alarm batteries, check your chimney's, clean out those pellet stove pipes also, check your electric cords for no damage, check your propane tanks and lines, and please no smoking when oxygen is in use. Lakeside Fire Department is again this year training all the kids at North Bay School and Light House about fire safety. They also come to Kid Zone monthly to teach about fire prevention and they do drills. Thank You all you young firefighters.
We have an LCA meeting coming up soon, and we do hope everyone in Lakeside can participate. We are working to improve Lakeside. Come join us Oct. 18 in City Hall Chambers @ 7pm.
By the way, the mayor looked great last night. A little pale, but good. We welcome him back and he thanked everyone for their prayers and thoughts. Our officer didn't show because of a previous engagement, but they planned on sending another officer, but as it goes, the whole staff of officers were on a case and none could leave because of safety for everyone involved. Hopefully at the LCA meeting an officer will show.
The annual christmas tree decoration is being worked on, the christmas program, and also Thanksgiving dinner. Check out the upcoming events. Thank You

Well said Popeye.
People who don't understand what a volunteer is and what a volunteer does will make posts in forums that speak badly of the people that volunteer. It is easy to sit at home and look for reasons to find fault with other people. I would think that those people are real bored living in Lakeside. Becomming involved with some of the many volunteer organizations in Lakeside would give a person with to much time on there hands plenty of things to do. They would meet new people, make new friends, and possibly change there opinion about things.
OR
They could move to the BIG CITY where they could find fault with everything, post to there hearts content, and no one would care.
All of the people who volunteer do care about Lakeside and that is why they do what they do. There are a larger percentage of volunteers in Lakeside than there are in most larger cites. THAT WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD OF and THANKFUL FOR.

Madam,
Since you are curious, instead of speculating, with question ? Why don't you stop at that house and walk up to the door , knock, when someone answers just........ ask what it means. You will get the right answer . The person that put it up knows what he/she is saying. I am sure that the banner was fairly expensive and that the statement has meaning the owner is serious about.
You might learn something and possibly make a friend at the same time.

On a manufactured home, close to the North Entrance into Lakeside, where there was a McCain-Palin political sign last week, there is now a banner(at the end of the house, under the eaves) with red kissing lips and the words (in red) "Oink, Oink" under the lips.
Does anyone know the significance of this? Kiss a Pig??? Eat Pork??? I love Bacon????
The last time I saw those lips it was a Rolling Stones Tour Logo or a poster for Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Just curious.

First thing, re-read your stuff before posting. You write like another child who dosen't care or understand anything. Why should any of this matter to you? You are just looking for trouble and we are all to busy dedicating ourselves to helping others, than deal with all this. Grow up and get a life. Those so called LCP members also belong to the Fire Dept.. If they are rushing to the fire hall, so does all the other fire dept. members. In fact, most of the LCP members have possibly had just as much or more training than some of the new trainees who are going in their own vehicles to the fire hall. At least we have warning lights on the Patrol Car, that the sheriff's office gave us permission to get. In fact, we were given the lights free out of the county yard. I think this lakegirl101 needs to get the lake water out of her head and maybe get some training herself. In fact, there is another ALERT class coming up that you could get some knowledge on before writing any of these statements. In fact, we have gone to and are certified for ALERT through the Emergency Management for the county if there is any disaster. We will be the first to respond to help our fire dept.. Anyone can go to the up coming class. Do me a favor and get involved and not critize all of us who work unselfishly to better our community. You go out and sit in a patrol car for 4-8 hours without a break. We also sit at the other end of Lakeside and no one there complains. GET A LIFE and let us serve our community to our best.
By the way, why do you care what Shawn, Shi, or the rest of us do? Just get off our rear and quite following us. WE have a job to do. None of us is paid anything for being on patrol. Put your mouth where it needs to be and help us raise money for the fuel and we wouldn't have to sit all the time. We would much rather be checking our neighborhoods. At least we are sitting at the busiest intersection in town. Plus, we know when you leave and when you come in for crime. Its put in our paperwork for the sheriff to look at daily. My advise, leave town, or get your butt in gear and help. Stop sitting on your behind and give back to your community. WE DO. We do know who you are too, the deputy has been watching for months. Just speed through town and run your loud music while he is here. He has your address and your plate number. We do know who the trouble makers are because we have done a great job with lots our training. You provided it. Please everyone who reads this, support your community and stop sending bad stuff out about the few people who care what happens to our community. We have put 100's of hours in every month to help protect you. Thank you.

I don't understand how LCP can sit on the empty lot on the corner of the railroad tracks and 8th st for hours chatting with shawn and shi or shawn and shi fallow around the LCP instead of being at home so LCP can do their job????? And its very un-safe for LCP to be flaying down the road wit their lights on to go to the fire hall for calls don't the fire hall have enough people on the department so that LCP can be doing what they do best????

I think I have just a few people's attention, but I hope you can pass it on. Our community has been doing great, at least I have think so. I have been pushing, a little, to help with Kid Zone, and getting it up and going good. From an average of 18 kids from last year, there is a surprising 22+ daily. In fact, 32 kids are signed up this year. I realize now that it is going real good and the kids are fabulous. They don't argue, fight, battle and scream at each other on the playground and get along great. I do hope that our community stops being bitter at each other and they do the same. Its up to us to change and act like adults. I do feel that talking to others in the community, that we all want the best for these kids. I hope to see new playground equipment so the kids can have an activity with or without parents. They hope to have several swings, several slides, and even a handicapped section with the equipment. They are even hoping of putting in a picnic table which the end serves as a spot for a wheel chair. But for now the kids play on the old metal pipes and tires. Soon a tetherball pole will be added outside the sand lot and also badmitten net. The poles will sit into under ground pole holders so Dennis and Billy can mow without hitting them. This will achieve more activity for the kids when it is nice enough to play. I have also heard that they may be open during the summer so the kids won't be running the streets. They are still taking cans and bottles in weekly to help with expenses. Just call Sandy at 759-4636 at Kid Zone from 3pm-6pm monday-friday.
I do see a lot of positive things that have happened in the past 2 years. We know we have a new sewer plant, maintenance reports at the sewer plants' are now done on all vehicles, the water lines are in the airport, (thanks to Phil Heley and his personal equipment), the old sewer plant is clean and working better than it ever did before because of hiring Phil Heley. Kid Zone fizzled out and started up again, the Lions Club is growing, the patrol is out seveal nights a week with volunteers (which will serve as back up the the new deputy),we have a beautiful garden club and the garden has done a lot to the community with its flower beds all around city hall and the garden by the senior hall is exceptional. Another great fact, we are going to have a deputy for 40 hours a week to work our streets and slow down crime. I do know that we are having a lot of robberies, drug activity, and drunks cussing all over town. In fact, the sheriff's dept. has chased several drunks out of the county park and city ball field during the day. It is time we took our city back and the officer is going to help. In fact, most are worried about traffic tickets. Well, are we above the law? If I speed, do a wrong U turn, or go against city ordinances, I do expect to get a ticket. It won't hurt me to admit I did wrong. I know we are not perfect, but I really doubt law biding citizen's are not going to be hit unless we disobey the law. I can tell you now, the drunks screaming around town, selling alcohol to kids, as well as drugs, sleeping in our city and county parks with no homes, their garbage laid out on the street as well as their dogs running loose at night, has got to stop. I watch these drunks daily. They have no intention of renting a house. They get help from the whole community by giving them yard jobs to buy more alcohol and then there is more fights, cussing in the streets, breaking into businesses and homes, and it is going to continue until we stop giving excuses for them not to get a real job. They all can work, most of them are not disabled, collecting disability, and just being lazy, drinking and vandelising our streets and houses. Our community garden has been picked on several times, the city property has been disturbed (beer cans everywhere and spray painting the walls), and there is plenty more. In fact, during the day yesterday, someone went to the city pickup and kicked a huge dent in it. Is this really necessary? Do we need to act like vandels? Are we ready for a change in our streets? Yes, of course. I want to not discourage the good works of the Garden Club, the Chamber, the Lions CLub, and Womens Club. They all want to improve the entrances of Lakeside. Are we going to let them do the entrances and attract more senior festivities? I want to be proud of our city and its looks.
You have to admit that we have an excellent place to fish, go boating, eat out without a crowd, monthly and weekly functions to attend, our clubs are growing, there is talk of having a new community center for large crowds, we have a city hall that is friendly, and good employees willing to help our seniors. Where do you get a bank that actually says Hello and has a conversation after that? I love our slow pace, but I do want to see more of you out and about and getting involved with this beautiful slow paced town. Look at all the walkers walking to and from the post office, McKays and back to home. Our Hennicks men are still friendly too. The clubs and organizations are even happier. Look at someone and smile, say HELLO. STOP and visit. The rain is going to come soon and so is the cold weather. Please don't hibernate so much that we don't see your smiley faces around town or at some of the functions. We all love to see a good turn out at the Lion's breakfast's or the city council meetings. There are plenty more if you go to the events that are listed on this website. Check it out and make some wonderful friends at these meetings. There is someone for all of you to meet. Look at the positives and have a wonderful winter. We also have a 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off coming November 7th at the Lions Club again. There will be items raffled off, great chili contest, and the same wonderful band "Stampede" will come and play western music again. The winner gets a trophy for the best chili. Maybe we can actually get dancing this year with the band. Dress up western if you got it. Lets have a real ho-down. This is sponsored by the Lakeside Community Association to raise money for other non-profit organizations who need funding. Last year the money helped with patrol gas and up keep of the vehicle, and also to help with safety for our firemen and women, who needed radio's for communication. Safety is first and communication goes with it. I must mention that the fire dept. is getting very educated by going to several classes and can handle most calls like experts. I do know that around 90% of their calls are medical and they are getting lots of training and have qualified several first responders. I also heard rumors that a few are going on to EMT training, as well as fire fighter 1 & 2 classes. Keep up the good work. There is also a Women's Club with a bunch of really nice concerned ladies helping with education for kids in Lakeside. Their fund raisers help with scholarships for kids in Lakeside. The Chamber is going strong now also. So get out and go to some meetings and get involved. We are getting our little town back on track. It has been a long two or three years for most of them, but they are loving the results.
At another note, we are going to really miss our fantastic, bright, educated, funny, sweet Jim Brown. It is going to be a real chore to replace all the things he has done for this city. There would not have been a Library or Water Shed without his help and support. The funeral was very well visited by old timers and new citizens of Lakeside and beyond. Even the state sent a represenative and so did the County with Bob Main attending. We will miss him greatly. He made his mark here in Lakeside, and I am asking everyone else to try a little. It will be for the betterment of Lakeside. Jim will always be in our hearts forever and never forgotten.
We also want to see Orville Nelson back home with a speedy recovery. I know that he had been running all over the state and town getting positive things done for our Lakeside before his accident. We have seen a big difference with Charlie, Suzie and Paulie doing such active work for Orville at city hall. We want to thank you girls for doing a great job. Orville and the council has picked real winners for city staff. Thank you for helping our community grow better. In fact, Charlie sits on the Fire Board and also the board for the LCA. Suzie is on the Patrol board. Paulie is a new comer. But, Orville will be back soon as he is a speedy healer. Nothing will keep him down to long.

So to end on a loving note, We all hope to see you at the next meeting or event and pass a smile onto others. Thank you.

Just want to weigh in on the Stables, I can't address the story about the tourists this fourth of July, however my friends and family have eaten at the Stables and find the food quite good. Last week I had visitors from Australia and they loved the breakfast at the Stables. I also think the 8th st. Grill is great too and had lunch with Italian visitors there recently, also the Lodge; I have not thoughts on the Depot Cafe as I have not eaten there yet. Lakeside might be the Rivera of the Northwest.

I want to take this time and let you know that this site is very informational and a huge plus for the city and the citizens of Lakeside. It allows all the citizens to keep in touch and up to date with what's going on in the community. Now all we need is a daily or weekly paper so the community is more up to date weekly would perhaps be a better idea. Then we wouldn't have to worry about or citizens reading garbage in the Reedsport area news every Tuesday which more or less bad mouths our city and whats going on in and around our city by doing this. We could put a stop to this trashy paper showing up in Lakeside once a week. I also want to give praise where praise is due to the local Fire dept they done such an out standing job with there Open house on September 11th and now once again this year I see that they have planned their Halloween party for October 31st which is always a fun and a success every year. Starting at 6pm so maybe the admin might want to post something on there front page letting all the citizens know. #1 Onething I would like to know that has been bothering me and many others in our community is about 3 months ago there was flyers all over town stating that some tourist were in town for I believe the fourth of july and that they had received FOOD POISONING at the Olde Stables. Then maybe a couple weeks later there was more stating that they had gotten sick from eating there and then heard the health department was there for aprox 4.5-5 hours. This is scary and think our citizen's should know about this as well and the risk of the product they eat when entering the Olde Stables since this has happen I have not been back since, me and my family use to frequient the stables twice a week and now we don't, for one the product isn't the best but you did get a lot of food. #2 The manager is rude to the staff we have noticed when in there, at busy periods, most of time. So now me and my big list of friends no longer will eat at the Stables. We choose The 8th street grill,Lakeshore lodge and Fred's Depot cafe which make wonderful Mexican food and the staff are great. Further more, I think that everyone in our community should attened the LCA meetings that help in funding our community or I hear that the LCA may fizzle out. Then there will be no grants to help our community grow.

Thank you, A citizen who is happy to live in this beautiful Community...

Since this is a site for the people of Lakeside, I have noted that the "links" are pretty right wing. There must be a couple of left wingers besides me and my husband in Lakeside. How about listing something us lefties like www.MoveOn.org; www.huffingtonpost.com or even a link to "Real Time with Bill Maher" he confronts both sides.
Being a first generation American (like myself) doesn't always mean you tiptoed in and are abusing the system (neither did my folks) - so I am a little sensitive to the blogs you have posted. I also grew up in a portion or Oregon where I watched the white business owners use and abuse the migrant fruit pickers each season. I learned there is a big difference from being a Northern European immigrant as apposed to being Hispanic.
Remember unless you are a Coos, Coquille or Siuslaw tribal member you are probably an immigrant yourself.

Sheley, I was at the meeting and confirm that Mayor Nelson did say 'it won't happen again,' just not sure what relevance that has. Now, if the offender was named, stood up and stated that it won't happen again, then I could see the relevance. I have done a bit of snooping and believe that Susie Marcy was the employee that gave the building permit, she is not authorized to do so., hence the problem. If she feels that she can reach outside of her job description for this, what is to say she won't do something similar in the future that will leave the city vulnerable to another lawsuit? The mayor said that a 'mistake was made and it won't happen again.' The mistake was that she went beyond her job requirement and experience, that is why the mistake was made. Sorry, but I for one don't feel very confident that a mistake like this won't happen again, especially as apparently there was no reprimand. How much did this cost the city in attorney consultation and placating the property owner? It is extremely important to look beyond the statement "oh gee, a mistake was made", there appears to be much more to it. Thank you for prompting further investigation.

Quick let's shut the "barn door" oh wait, the horse is already out! Just saying "I promise it won't happen again" doesn't cut it. We're not talking little kids here - just slapping their hands and tell them not to do it again. This is serious. This could have cost the city a lot of money in a law suit. The office staff is suppose to be trained qualified professionals able to run the office. "Everyone" makes mistakes but this kind of mistake is not acceptable or without consequences. What is it you don't understand about that? This can't be personal but we have to find out what happened and make sure nothing like it happens again. Maybe having consequences makes sure it WON'T happen again!

At the the July 10, 2008 council meeting Jim Farmer in his council report on the planning commission, quietly tap danced around something most in the audience and I suspect the council itself. were ignorant of. A unnamed person, issued a improper building permit for a (3) story building, in violation of fire codes (no ladder for 3 story buildings), and it also exceeds the height limits of city building codes. Who was that masked man who issued that defective permit, and what's former councilor Green's connection to the project? No names were mentioned and when the Mayor was asked by Jim, that the mayor sees to it whoever was responsible doesn't do it again, the Mayor's reply was "it was a mistake and we all make mistakes" Mistakes that could result in large lawsuits, should be addressed to ensure they don't happen again, don't you think your honor, or is that person untouchable?

I do not know what his letter said. It appears that opinions have already been formed that make him out to be someone who is beating his own drum. This comment was printed in the Rumor or Not? page of the Reedsport Area News. If you spend any time listening to Mr. Nelson you will see that he is applauding the people in the city that are doing the work, not tooting his own horn. I hope to see the Letter that he presented to the Reedsport Area News in the future publication. There are a lot of interesting things in this publication... I just would have liked to have seen the letter in the Rumor or Not? Section along with the comments...
