Tsunami evacuation drill planned for coastal communities

Feb 05, 2012 3 Comments Print

On May 31, 2012 at 2 pm, coastal communities in Coos County are planning a Community-Wide Tsunami Evacuation Drill from Lakeside to Charleston. It is hoped everyone will get involved and follow along with the drill.

In a few days Tsunami Outreach Oregon will begin a door to door campaign of every home in the Inundation Zone to teach people about Evacuation Routes and Assembly Areas in our community in the event of a Major Earthquake and Tsunami.  Everyone is encouraged to get involved, make a plan and participate in the drill.

I can understand low lying costal communities being included in evacuation drills, but why Lakeside? Look at a goggle image of the area from the ocean shore, and you will see a massive 2-mile section of porous high sand dunes, and forest between Lakeside and the shoreline. Ten Mile creek is not tidal influenced, narrow, serpentine and shallow.

So until someone can show me a scientific computer model showing Lakeside would be impacted by a Tsunami, I consider this an exercise in fear mongering, and waste of taxpayer recourses.

Thanks Newhere for the info, but as I suspected Lakeside isn’t even listed in the evacuation zone; however low lying harbors would be pretty much toast in extreme cases, they do offer this caveat though:
“These maps are not intended for emergency evacuation purposes and do not necessarily represent tsunami inundation from a worst-case event.”
