From The Mayors Desk September 2010

On Sept. 15 councilperson Christa Swift, Planning Commission member Shirley Janssen, and myself, attended City Hall Week hosted by the City of Florence.

City Hall week

The meeting provided us access to some of our State legislators, as well as some of the candidates for those positions. The main topics consisted of questions and comments regarding the top four priority picks of a recent survey sent out by the League of Oregon cities.

The luncheon was very informative as well as a good forum to make our wishes known to those folks elected to represent us at both a State and local level.

Senior rent negotiations

In September Councilperson Armstrong and I met with two representatives of the senior group to discuss their paying a fair share of the utilities for occupying one of the rooms at City Hall. They were unwilling to negotiate and were under the opinion that the city should give them the room for nothing and subsidize their program with approximately $166 worth of electricity, water, sewer, trash, and restroom supplies, that they use.

The Tuesday and Thursday meal program was contracted directly between Lakeside City and South Coast Business Employment Corporation (SCEBEC) earlier this year. The $300 a month that this provider pays leaves an approximate $166 of a $466 total.

I am still of the opinion that a city without funds cannot and should not subsidize even the most worthwhile of private organizations with limited tax monies available. We will continue to negotiate in good faith with the seniors and desire a fair resolution for both.

Chamber of Commerce

I attended the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Oct. 12. Some good folks are working hard to get “Hooked on Lakeside” out there in publications and on the internet to bring tourists and their dollars to Lakeside. Tourist dollars translate to business dollars and the whole city wins when our businesses win.

Welcome to Lakeside

This past month I have had the privilege of meeting and talking with many of you. I once again come to the conclusion that Lakeside is home to some of the most wonderful people on this planet. Also I was surprised at the number of new folks that have moved here recently. To all of you I say welcome to Lakeside.
