All about the lake!
“Wisconsin Plankton Net! Wisconsin Plankton Net!” was one of the shouts given by the kids riding on the pontoon boat during last week’s Summer Reading Program, “Make a Splash–Read,” sponsored by the Lakeside Public Library.
Water samples and whatever else
The program was presented by Mike Mader, Tenmile Lakes Watershed Coordinator. He kept the attention of the passengers with his interesting insights and demonstrations. Each participant had an opportunity to throw the Wisconsin plankton net over the side of the boat and collect samples of water–and whatever else was in the water. They also measured the temperature of the lake using a digital thermometer.
Mader shared many interesting facts during the trip including what makes a watershed, the five types of swallows, what plankton is, the different types of fish in the 47 miles of lakes, and why it’s important to get samples of water—just to name a few observations.
All passengers followed boating safety rules and wore life jackets.
A special thanks to Mike Mader for an interesting program and to Jerry Cox, our captain. We also thank Ringo’s Marina, Osprey Point, and the STEP program for making the trip possible.
