Making a ‘splash’ with clay
Make a Splash, Read!
Splashing in bowls of water and glazes (paint) the kids enjoying the first field trip in the library’s summer reading program were wading through glazing bisque fish, turtles, seahorses, dragonflies and seashells. Clay pinch pots were shaped to each child’s particular artistic idea.
The clay pots will be air-dried then will be glazed and fired before being sent on to the young artists when complete. Every child learned that when they create something with their own hands whether others like it or not, they have created art. 10 trays were loaded with each person’s art and labeled with their names for later identification.
Water uses
The potters taught the kids the value of water in their work. Sculptors, painters and potters must keep their clay moist with water Clay and paints are more pliant when they have the correct amount of moisture provided by water. And, yes, there was lots of hand washing during our two-hour visit.
Looby Leaves
Thanks to “Looby’s Leaves” Studio for providing all the supplies, the firing kiln and the space to Lakeside’s Summer Reading group to experience making pottery. Thanks to Colleen of “Pottery By The Bay” who helped the kids to choose colored glazes and shape their balls of green clay into pinch pots and press shell designs into pots that will hold treasures for years to come.
“Looby’s Leaves” are decorative art with a Raku glaze, Raku is an ancient Japanese form of the glazing process. “Looby’s Leaves” may be found in 2nd Street Gallery-Bandon, Sticks & Stones Gallery-Florence, Oceanic Arts- Newport, Ryan Gallery- Lincoln City and Shoreline Gallery of Eureka, CA.

Thanks to Teri Macduff for coming along on the bus ride to help keep an eye on our kids. Miss Sue and the librarian really appreciated an extra pair of hands and eyes for this adventure.
Both potters and the bus driver complimented Lakeside’s kids for being a “well-behaved, enjoyable, great bunch of kids”. Yay! Lakeside kids!
