From the Desk of Mayor Rod Schilling for July 2010
I have the privilege of serving as your Mayor after the resignation of Orville Nelson in February 2010. My intent is to do a good job for all the citizens of Lakeside in protecting your rights. The buck stops with me; I take full responsibility when things go wrong and no credit when they go well.
Having said that, I want you to know that as soon as I was aware there was a potential problem with Ordinance 10-269 I contacted the City Attorney asking him to look into it. This will be addressed at our regular August meeting.
Reason behind the Ordinance
Lakeside has some ongoing blighted property problems that pose a health risk to their neighbors. We will see this through for the benefit of most, because you have asked us to. Your City Council will make sure to put in place the legal and proper law.
I encourage you to continue to hold our feet to the fire; all government needs checks and balances. Your current city representatives value your opinions and won’t reject them out of hand.
The flood
A rusted out water heater was responsible for major damage to the Lakeside library, causing its temporary closure. Library Director Nadine Goodrich took it in stride and kept the closure to a minimum of days. The summer reading program wasn’t affected and continues to be a huge success.
Request for information
City Hall received a letter requesting information as to how much the Mayor and City Councilors are paid. These are unpaid positions. We “volunteer” for these positions as a means of giving back to the community in which we live.
If you are interested in serving in one of these positions, applications and instructions are available at City Hall explaining the election process.
Misquoted
Considering that several Hollywood tabloids are still in business I suppose that a lot of people prefer fantasy to reality. This last month I received a phone call to the effect of, “what a great quote that was published in our local tabloid.” I looked it up and it was indeed a nice quote, except for one small fact. I did not say anything of the sort.
Considering its record of being truth challenged I do not give quotes to this particular “paper”. If you see me quoted in The World Newspaper, lakesideinfo.com, or the Lakeside Fire District news letter, there’s a good chance that the statement contains the truth. If you choose to believe in fantasy then the supermarket checkout stand will have this type of news waiting for you most weeks.
Public forum
A public forum to discuss updating Lakeside’s R/V ordinance will be held on August 5 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting will be moderated by Mattie Lane of Lakeside’s Planning Commission. The incoming mail seems overwhelmingly in favor of some kind of temporary R/V use on private property. Plan to attend and express your viewpoint.
