Hands on computer instruction at Lakeside library
Lakeside Library is offering a six week course of basic computer instruction:
♦ Getting to know your computer/laptop
♦ Terminology (monitor, mouse, tower/hard drive, keyboard and number pad)
♦ Creating word documents
♦ Signing up for and using email and browsing the Web
♦ Using the Internet
Instructor Robi plans to adjust the class to suit the requirements of the students. Class will be held every Friday through May 7, at 2 – 3:30 pm. The eight public computers will be reserved for this specific time period.
The volunteer instructor, Robi, has 20 years of experience in computer use and training others at various levels. Robi also volunteers at Lakeside Senior Center.
Robi is a bright, cheerful presence who teaches with humor and is always open to questions. She warns her students that she “talks really fast”, so they are responsible for “slowing” her down.
Robi explained that electronic connections is a must in today’s world of high technology and says her goal is to enable the students to “do the things that they want to do”; exchange emails and photos with family and friends.
Today’s class was a success, all eight chairs were filled for the first class and the library was definitely not quiet.
Everyone was enthusiastic, there was laughter, lots of questions and fear of “breaking everything” in the computer.
Seven of the eight intend to return while another patron who was visiting the library will be taking up the eighth seat next week.
The Librarian is delighted.
