New older adult safety

The Office of State Fire Marshal’s Community Education Section, in partnership with the Oregon Life Safety Team, on fire and fall prevention and safety for older adults, aimed at reducing fire and fall injuries and fatalities in Oregon’s older adult population.

According to Portland State University Population Research Center, more than 30% of Oregon’s population is age 50 and over. And in the five-year period from 2005-2009, this age group accounted for 60% of fire fatalities in Oregon. In addition, falls are the leading cause of hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries among Oregon’s older adults.
