Getting into the swing of spring

This year, Harmony garden has 20 raised beds available. As of this date there are five beds still available. Several holders have already started planting, some by seed and others by “starts.”

Harmony’s cold frame bed has been planted with radishes, walla walla onions, green peppers, peas, cabbage and pak choi (a small cabbage like veggie). We also have covered it with a 6 mm thick sheet of plastic to speed growth and protect it from the elements.

The Seniors’ bed has onions, peas, and kohlrabi (a relative of cabbage).  Presently I have numerous types of tomatoes growing unders lights along with peas, broccoli, lettuce and squash.

If I had more room, I’d be growing more stuff that eventually I plan on distributing to the box holders free of charge.

Last week Rudy Sherych built two (2) new composting bins made from wooden pallets.  He also trucked in a load of fresh wood chips that he and Mike Armstrong spread out over the flower garden area by City Hall.

Sherry and I have been weeding the areas between the beds and Dennis Langley has loaned us the City’s little lawnmower to keep our little area mowed.

This planting season should be a big success and I am looking forward to many enjoyable and rewarding days participating in that success.
