Lakeside committees multiply

At the February city council meeting, Councilor Armstrong, requested those interested in serving on a Nuisance/Abatement Committee please contact city hall at: 541-759-3011.

One of the most frequent complaints received by city hall is hazardous junk collected on certain properties along with derelict cars. The city has a policy of requesting that complaints must be in writing and signed before the city takes action.

Most people complaining about their neighbors don’t want to sign for fear of repercussions.

The committee approach will take the ow-nous off the single nervous complainant.

Lakesideinfo.com questioned Councilor Armstrong as to the objective of the committee, she stated, “It will make for a fair look at property without prejudice.” She went on to say, “the city ordinances and laws apply to all of our citizens, including those of us that sit on the council. With a committee of peers no one can cry foul.”

The questionnaire that was handed out at the recent Townhall meeting and circulated to  citizens, had many responding, “they would like to see nuisance properties cleaned up,” stated City Recorder, Charlie Hill.

The committee will only recommend. The recommendation will go to city recorder, Charlie Hill, who will investigate making sure it falls under the city ordinances. If it does, she will take it to the council, where as a whole it will be decided whether or not to move forward.

Several months ago the council advised City Attorney, Fred Carlton, to re-write Lakeside’s ordinance making it enforceable. Ordinance-09-26 is in place and is in the process of being used.  Now, the city can go about the business of cleaning itself up.

This brings the number of city committees to three. The first to be formed was the Parks Advisory/Community Garden, then the Law Enforcement Committee, and now the Nuisance Abatement Committee.

The council is in agreement that the more involvement from the community the better it is for the city. The committees are one tool to help accomplish that.
