Summer reading program winding down
As Autumn nears and back to school will soon be a reality, this year’s successful Lakeside Library Summer Reading Program will also be drawing to a close.
Last week’s theme by master gardener Aaron Richards titled “King of Soil” brought us the lowly earth worm.
The session included a special treat when Aaron’s worm box display revealed for the first time in his experience, along with the kids, an egg break and release a tiny earthworm.
Aaron explained the benefits of having one’s own compost heap, the importance of garden watering times, and the proper use “or not” of pesticides. The kids, along with 2 adults, were given a tour of Lakeside’s beautiful Harmony Garden.
Aaron talked about how to grow various vegetables including carrots, brussel sprouts, potatoes and tomatoes. And, to their delight, each “reader” received a fresh red potato grown in a bucket, and carrots pulled right out of the earth.
With only one session to go, the kids will be finalizing their books read and attendance points for this summer’s prize list. And the “Barrel-o-Beans” will be awarded to the child who has guessed the closest number to the number of beans in the jar.
So, show up this Wednesday at 1:30 at the Lakeside Library and be prepared for a very special treat. Jonie Reeder of “Cakes by Jonie” will be the presenter and her baked treats are sure to be in abundance.
Don’t miss this last-of-the-series chance to have some “reading fun”.
