The need for an independent news source in town? Preview of tonight’s city workshop

Mar 09, 2009 No Comments Print

This evening is the second Lakeside City Council workshop of 2009.

Among agenda items up for discussion, you’ll find out what you already know: this website is not affiliated in any way with the City of Lakeside. But Mayor Nelson has paid the city attorney some of your tax money to make this very point.

The item proceeds from city council member Rod Schilling asking questions about the propriety of the way in which the city sewer plant is being managed.

As newspapers across the nation are bathing in red ink and folding left and right, the internet is the new publishing venue of journalism. It’s a brave new world, as a dramatic shift  in the way news is delivered to your “doorstep” is in progress.

Seattle’s only daily, the Post Intelligencer, owned by the Hearst Corporation conglomerate, is either heading out of business or it may join Lakesideinfo.com as an internet only “newspaper.”  Should it be called a “newsweb,” since there’s no paper?

Also, one of our greatest founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson said “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter.”

Stay tuned to Lakesideinfo.com for complete coverage on tonight’s meeting.
