Osprey Point Fire

On Saturday, January 10, Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1505 North Lake Road, at Osprey Point, reported as “one of the cabins”.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an approximate 600 sq. foot structure with fire coming through the roof. The fire problem was compounded by a burn victim and E.M.S. was responded. Crews supplied first aid to the victim, a 57 year old female with inhalation problems and burns to the arms and face.

The fire was aggressively attacked and extinguished in a short amount of time. Initial investigation showed that the fire appeared to be a cooking fire fed by a quantity of frying oil left too long on the burner.

Follow-up investigation is ongoing and the victim was transferred by ground ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene where she is reported to be in stable condition.

Thanks to the quick response from the Lakeside Fire Department, what could have been a tragic loss was mitigated with a minimum of loss.

Please remember when frying to have the appropriate size lid available in case of flashover and if it can be done safely, place the lid over the fire starving it of oxygen and at the same time extinguish the burner under the fire. If this cannot be done safely, leave the premises and call 911.

Also remember to not re-enter a structure on fire. The atmosphere can quickly become toxic and high temperatures can burn the lungs in as little as one breath.
