The ‘gift’ by Pastor John Adams

“And He will be called: ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ ”

By Pastor John Adams

As I have been reflecting on Christmas this year, I’ve been thinking about gifts.

I’ve been thinking about the gifts I plan to give others and the joy that giving just the right gift can bring.

I’ve also been thinking about the gifts my creative wife is making for others, and the undeserved credit I get from her efforts since she puts my name on the “from” line as well.

Without taking away from the joy of giving, there is joy in receiving a heartfelt gift as well.

Such gifts might be typified by the following:

  • ♥ That first bicycle, found under the Christmas tree many years ago.
  • ♥ The favorite CD from a family member who doesn’t even like your style of music.
  • ♥ The gift you didn’t actually ask for, hoping someone would “read your mind,” and they did!

God made us to value giving and receiving because He made us to love us. He tells us that Jesus is His gift to us, the best gift of all.

The birth of Jesus was predicted as God’s gift this way, “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace*.”

He is so much more than a helpless baby in the manger, and He is the best gift you could ever receive: God’s gift of love to you.

*Isaiah 9:6-7 from the New Living Translation of the Bible
